Wow, what a day!!!! Norm flat "tore 'em up" in therapy. He walked 650 ft. without a walker, and with only one short rest!!!!! That was so neat to see. At the very last part of his walk, he told the therapist that he didn't think he could make it. The therapist looked at him and said "yes you can", and Norm finished his walk. It was so cool. He really had no idea he could do that.
Occupational therapy is going well. There is such a huge improvement since he first got to rehab. Things that used to tire him out, he can do several times in a row!!! He is still working on fine motor skills. I think that is where most of the work will come, but there is improvement there also. He has been saying that his shoulders and arms are sore, and I told him that is because he is using them and getting the muscles back in shape. There is a lot of upper body conditioning in occupational therapy too. Thank goodness for Tylenol.
Speech is good. He continues to surprise his therapist. His memory is getting stronger every day and he can remember things that they did last week, and things they talked about. He can do math better than the therapist and has corrected him a couple of times!!!
We have homework from all three therapys, so they are bound and determined to get him the heck out of there, once and for all, except to come and visit.
As I said before, Dr. Walkers assistant called today and said they want him to come in for a once-over on Monday. It seems after Dr. Mitchell ( the heart surgeon) and Dr. Walker (the cardiologist ) talked, as a result of the appointment we had with Dr. Mitchells assistant, they have decided they want to do another cardioversion on Tuesday, if everything checks out on Monday. I must admit that makes me a little nervous, but, the other two he has had have made me nervous too, and he was in a lot worse shape than he is now. It is very important to try to get his heart out of a-fib, so, third time is a charm!!!! When they put the pacemaker in and did the second cardioversion, his heart stayed in a normal heartbeat for five days and then went right back into a-fib. Of course you know that a-fib is and irregular heartbeat. There are a ton of people who walk around for years in a-fib, but Norms got worse and that is what started this whole big mess!!!! So, we shall see. It would be wonderful for him to be back in a regular heartbeat, but, it still scares me. They say that he will go home that day, so.....that is good but I bet he will be "tuckered".
When they do a cardioversion, they shock the heart. My sister in law came clear up off the table...her whole body, when they did it to her. When they did Norm the second time, they said that I could stay and see it if I wanted to, and I declined!!! No thanks...I have seen enough!!! I will just be glad when it is over.
Tomorrow is going to be a huge day. We are going to the Mt. Timpanogos Temple to witness his brothers wedding. Then we are going to his sisters house to have a BBQ before everyone has to go back home. So, it is going to be big for him, but he feels so much better, that I think he is going to be fine.
Somehow, today seems to be a real turning point. I think now that he knows he can do things, he will improve even faster. I am very excited.

Freaky Friday!!!!
Actually, I don't know if it is going to be freaky or not. It just sounded good. No update last night cause I was too tired to type...literally!!!! Today we got a really late start on things cause we slept way late, but, I guess we both needed it. We got ready for the day and took a walk, and that is about it so far.
Norm has occupational, physical and speech therapy today, so, I will have to get back to this tonight. Tomorrow is going to be a big day for him so, we will probably go to bed early.
Dr. Walkers (the cardiologist) P.A. called today, so I will fill in later. Sorry all. I was just tired last night.
Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again?

Weary Wednesday!!!! (5/21/08)
There are little invisible people running around my yard, turning on my sprinklers!!!!! Norm and I were up in the bedroom getting his shoes on, and just kind of visiting, and he heard a noise. I thought it was just a truck hitting a bump on the road beside our house. Then we heard it again and it was water hitting the house!!! We looked out the window and our sprinklers were on. They had been broken for a week or so, and we had just got the parts to fix them yesterday. We don't know how they came on. So, as we were getting ready, I had to go out and wade through the mud, and get hit with the sprinklers , to get them turned off!!! I don't think this is a good time for me and sprinklers!!!!
On to our appointment with the heart surgeon. Actually, it was his P.A. We were very late because his office was not where I thought it was, plus we had to get that stupid sprinkler off, plus...."someone had to go potie". But, we got there and they were pretty nice about everything. I am not sure about Norm but I feel a lot better after the appointment. He explained to Norm exactly what they did to his heart and I think Norm feels better about that. The P.A. explained the sleeplessness, fatigue, loss of appetite, anxiety, coughing, fluid retention and all of those wonderful other issues that go along with heart surgery, as normal. And because of Norms extended hospital stay and three cardiac arrests, plus all of the other stuff, those things are kind of magnified. He is beginning to understand now, what it is going to take to control some of that stuff. He understands that this is just something he is going to have to work through. Most of it was stuff that we had talked about before, but it helped to have it come from someone else besides me. So, the heart surgeon has cut us loose, and we now go to Norms cardiologist. I will miss Dr. Mitchell, but I can always touch base with him through Jake.
Physical therapy worked Norm pretty hard to day. He walked all over the place without his walker. They worked on balance and one would never realize how hard that is and how much energy it takes. He is flat tuckered tonight. His recovery, after a workout like that is much faster now too, so, there are improvements all of the time. I think it will be a while before he can run a road race, but, soon.....maybe!!!! Ha, yea, right!!!!!
Occupational therapy is a little easier, but he has to work other muscles, so, it is a different kind of torture!!!! He has a little weakness on his right side, for some reason, so it makes it hard for him to write and pick up small things. They worked on that a bit today, plus made him do the "arm bike". So, it isn't really easier...just different.
Tomorrow we have the day off, but I have to take my dog to the vet for a "well puppy check". He is way beyond being a puppy, but I just call him "Puppy" so he won't feel bad. He needs a shot, and just checked over. Norm doesn't really want to go, so Christy is going to come and visit with him while I am gone. It will be a good time for them.
So, again, things are moving forward and that is what we want to see. We are so grateful for all of the prayers that have been offered, the help that has been given and the concern shown. It is wonderful to have friends and family who are so willing to help and do so without a hesitation. Thank you everyone.

Tuesday..Errand Day!!! (May 13,08)
Man alive....therapy days are a piece of cake compared to today!!!! We decided last night that if Norm felt better, that we would go do some errands today. When he got up, he seemed much better than yesterday, so we decided to get some stuff done. We went to the "undie" store, then to the bank, then to Costco, did some shopping and had lunch, (I'm a cheap date!!! They have the best hot dogs and Polish sausages there for $1.50, plus a drink and one refill. Can't beat that), then we went to Home Depot to get a "thingie" for the sprinkler thingies, then we had to go clear to the other side of town and pick up a prescription at Wal Mart. That's one of the few times I have ever gone in there and come out with nothing but what I intended to get. I must be sick. It's just a good thing the pharmacy is no where near the craft dept!!!!
By the time we got home, we were both tired. I managed a little cat nap and Norm sat out on the deck. It wasn't really warm today so he didn't stay long.
Today, even with all of our errands, it was a much better day than yesterday. Yesterday, I think he was just too tired. He hadn't slept well, after going to the ER but, he was much better today. I was kinda worried yesterday. Even the therapists were a little concerned. When he gets tired like that he needs more oxygen and it was up quite a bit, over the past few days. Today, it is back down where it should be, but his blood sugars are up. Don't know what's going on with that, but we will figure it out.
We got another statement from the hospital today about the charges. These are itemized statements about the radiology, pharmacy, nursing charges, room charges, doctor charges, etc. The first one we got was for about $275,000.00. Then, we got one for about $74,000.00, and the one today was about $24,000.00!!!! Does that blow you away or what???? I don't remember the cost, but he was in the operating room for 577 minutes. I will have to look it up, but the cost of this stuff is amazing. I don't know what people do that don't have insurance. There certainly wasn't anything else we could have done. One of Norms doctors told him that if he didn't have this surgery, he would die. So, what do you do????
Anyway, tomorrow, we are going on to therapy again, but before that we have an appointment with our favorite Dr. Mitchell. He is the heart surgeon, and a wonderful, caring man. He was so worried about Norm but last time we saw him, Norm was walking with no help and I thought Dr. Mitchell was going to cry. He gave us both a huge hug and just kind of stood there looking at Norm. He was so happy. I think the whole thing was almost as hard on him as it was on Norm. One of the things that bothered Dr. Mitchell, I think, was that he and Jake (my son) work together and are "buds". It is funny to see Jake and Dr. Mitchell walk into a room together. Jake is 6'4" tall and a big boy. Dr. Mitchell is about 5'7" and very thin. What a sight that is!!!
I don't know how, but in between all of the "stuff", I actually got some dishes done, and a little bit of laundry. Like I said before, domesticity is not my call, but it did feel good to get something done.
On to more "stuff" tomorrow. Bed time now.

A New Week!!! (Mon., May 12, 2008)
Well, what do you know??? It's bedtime!!!! Who would'a thunk it???? What happened to the day??? Norm and I are both so tired after last night, plus he has had an upset stomach most of the day, that we are both ready for bed. Actually, he is already there!!!!
Therapy went well today. Like I said, he wasn't feeling really well, so it was pretty hard on him, but he did it. We talked about this when he began rehab, that he would have to work sometimes when he was sure he couldn't....and he has. Today, was no exception. He worked really hard. He had occupational therapy first where they are working on his upper body strength, and fine motor skills. They are coming along really well. The fine motor skills are really doing well. He can write legibly now!!! Since the surgery and him being so weak, he has gotten really shaky. But, he is learning how to control it and is doing much better. All along, I have been afraid that he wouldn't be able to go out to his shop and work with his power tools but, I think that will come. A couple of days ago, he found some kind of excuse to go out to the shop, and when we got there and found what he wanted, he just sat in his chair, at his work bench and looked around. I felt so bad, because I know how much he loves that shop. I have the same kind of "relationship" with my sewing and craft room!!!! He will get back out there, I'm sure of it.
Speech was good also. I am more amazed every day, at how much he remembers, and how well he can sort it all out!!!! The speech therapist has had Norm get a little pocket planner to keep track of all of his appointments and wants him to put some names and address's in it. I thought that was a great idea. We did it and it really has helped. Believe it or not, it has helped his writing too. It is one more thing that he can control and do by himself. Every little bit helps. I am trying really hard, to not get in his face and to let him struggle with things a little bit. It is very hard because he has been through so much that I just want to help and make things easier. Short-term, maybe I am making things a little easier for him, but long-term, I am not sure if I am doing him any favors. He will have to do it someday...I just have to learn to let go, and still be there when he may need some help.
Physical therapy was a little hard for him, but he was pretty pleased with what he accomplished. He and the therapist took quite a long walk, plus some time on a machine that works the legs, similar to a bike. Then, they went to the balance bars and did some work on balance and some more leg work. The therapists work them hard, but it also helps to get his mind off of his situation. I have always felt that if he were ever to get depressed, then we would be in real trouble. Depression is so hard to overcome...but, so far, he has done well. One of the reasons that I don't get much done around the house, is that when we do have free time, we talk a lot. It has been pretty frustrating to him, not to remember anything from a couple of days before he went in for the surgery, until he got to rehab, which was 7 weeks. He has lost almost two months. Sometimes when we talk about some of the things that he has been through, he will look at me and say "how did I miss that???" or "why can't I remember any of that???". I keep tellling him that there are very few people, having been through what he has been through, that would remember. Some say that it is a good thing that he can't remember, but then again, he is slow to see any progress that he has made, because he has no idea how seriously ill he was, and that he almost died at least three times. But, this too shall pass and he will be at peace with it.
I saw some people that I care a lot about today, at rehab. We met in the ICU waiting room, and have kind of followed each other around. Norm has been in the hospital a little longer than they have, but they have been in rehab longer than we, if that makes any sense. At any rate, they are finally going home tomorrow after a long, hard road, and I am so happy for them. They are awesome examples to so many others, including Norm and I. I will miss them tons, but am so very excited for them.
Rick and Tara, we all love you, and wish you the very best. You will be missed, but it is wonderful to know that you are going on to bigger and better things. Much love to you both.
It is so amazing to me how you can make friends in the wierdest places. There was another couple that we all met in the ICU, and they were awesome. These couples loved ones had devestating injuries rather than illness, and to see how far they have come and how hard they have fought, it is amazing. They are very young, but fight like troopers. I love you all and am very grateful that you have touched my life, cause you have, you know!!!!
Well, on to another day tomorrow. Each day, I say I am going to get some housework done, and it doesn't happen, so, I am not going to say that I am going to get my kitchen cleaned up, vacuuming done, and hopefully some laundry. You didn't hear me say that, cause I didn't!!!

Sunday...Mothers Day!!!
I sure think it is the coolest thing to be a mother. There were quite a few years that I didn't think I would be, but my two children were well worth the wait. My son was sick today and couldn't come over because we don't need Norm to get sick. So, we missed his family, but Christy came by with Katie and Roger so that was nice. She brought me the cutest little cake. I wish I had a camera so I could have taken a picture. Anyway, unbeknownst to me, my daughter and daughter in law got together and had a picture taken of all of our grandchildren. The actual picture is not done yet, but, it will be soon. It was very nice and I can't wait to hang it up. I love looking at the kids.
I think Norm was kind of bummed because he couldn't get out and do anything or cook my breakfast, but it was enough to know that he wanted to. Christy had left us some of her chicken enchiladas so we were going to have them for dinner and just about the time that we were going to think about eating, Norm began to have trouble breathing, so we spent the remainder of our evening in the emergency room. They did a ct scan and a bunch of blood work...all looking really good. The only thing they can figure out was that his lungs had some "gunk" in them and it was blocking part of the airway. He has coughed a lot and gotten a lot of stuff out of his lungs for the last little while, so that is the only thing they can figure out. They started him on antibiotics just to be sure there was not the beginning of pneumonia or anything even close to that. So, we shall see what happens now. He has an appointment with the heart surgeon on Wed and that will be good. Maybe they will come up with something.
I was going out to the ER office to let them know that we would be having visitors in a few minutes, and someone called my name as I was walking by the nurses station!!!! It was a friend of mine from church and she ended up being the one that did the CT scan. Interesting huh??? It was good to see her.
So, interesting Sunday, and we never did make it to church because we were all ready and went to switch Norm from the oxygen machine that we have here at the house, to a small tank to fit into his walker, and the stupid valve wouldn't work right. It is one of those that is a pulsating thing and gives him a shot of air...it is triggered by his own breath, but he had to about suck in his teeth to get it to work....so, we would have been really late, had we taken the time to switch out more tanks and valves.....so, we stayed home and went to the emergency room instead!!! That was hours later, but I think we just needed to see the inside of a hospital again!!!! It is amazing how it seemed so familiar and my eyes just immediatly went up to the monitor that they hook you up to, and began watching his oxygen saturation levels. I had done that for nine weeks and now was back once again, watching the monitor. But, this time it wasn't for very long and now we are home and I'm going to bed!!!
All is well here. We go to therapy again tomorrow, but not till later in the day, so, we will have time to "veg". Yea, like I am going to "veg" with laundry pushing out the bathroom door, dirty dishes stacked to the ceiling, the kitchen floor is so sticky that you could use it for fly paper, and there are just "treasures" all over the place. So, I can just "cowboy up", and get going.
Let go, and
Let God!!!!!
